Keepin’ it Real, People!

I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Take a look at my closet.

photo (24)That blinding light near the top is not a booming voice from above, admonishing me to clean my closet, but it should be. It’s my chandelier, but not even a little bit of pretty bling can cover the multitude of sins lying about in this space.

And the area on my side of the bed I affectionately call “my nest.” Oy!

photo (23)Piles of clothes, empty rice cake bags (at least it’s not Cheetos, right?), lampshades askew…what a mess. In fact, this morning I found that lamp wedged between the wall and my nightstand. I have no idea.

So why am I literally posting pictures of my dirty laundry? Because, you know, desperate times. I’d love to say that things are in such disarray because we are smack dab in the middle of the shoulder season and I have all of summer crammed in there with a few touches of fall about. Truth be told, it is because I finally “unpacked” from my trip to Round Top. I was so proud of myself for putting my suitcase back where it goes within six (ok, ok, eight) days of returning that I ignored the fact that I just grabbed everything that was in it and chunked it in the closet. And now I can’t take it anymore.

That’s where you come in, dear readers. You may not know this, but this weekend you are serving as my own personal closet accountability group. I will conquer this mess this weekend. And I will cull out those things that do not fit, do not flatter, or haven’t been worn in a year’s time. I will.

Now, I’m not ready to drag out the wool sweaters just yet, but it is a great time to take inventory of what I have (I’ve been know to double purchase, know what I mean?) and I really don’t want to part with money for stuff I already have squirreled away in, around, and under my dresser.

Are you feeling empowered to do the same? Well, readers, those of you in the greater metropolitan Abilene area may want to consider starting a nice, neat stack (not a messy pile) of those things you no longer wish to manage. Enter My Sister’s House. Remember the cute stuff I found there last season? It’s that time of year again. If you don’t live in the area, check online to see if your community has a similar resale extravaganza for all the stuff you’d like to rotate out…shoes, handbags, accessories, even home decor and furniture. Not only will it help you clean up, you just may wind up with a little cash in your pocket when it’s all over. And your stuff may really bless someone else. Win-win-win.

Screen Shot 2013-10-11 at 11.03.59 AMEdie over at Life in Grace has some great tips on really doing it right. The six commandments of cleaning your closet, if you will. And I will. Read Part I here and Part II here. Great stuff, people!

Ok. I did it. I posted the mayhem. Now to get to work so that I don’t accidentally pull some gauzy frock out and risk looking like, as my mom would say, “the last rose of summer.” Will you join me in this closet crusade?
